Projects

Tree Planting

On Tuesday the 21st of July 2022, GEMS started our very first tree planting session which in turn kickstarted our GEMS “Tree for Life” project. Our volunteers visited a Quran memorization school in the village of Batakunku, to plant a diverse number of trees.

Hygiene Packs

Many young girls abstain from going to school during their monthly cycle due to the lack of sanitation products. Our aim is to provide each girl with a sustainable sanitary pack that is reusable so that they never have to miss out on a day of their education.

Educational Programme

Jama recently joined GEMS in our Education Programme, her dream is to become an accountant. Thanks to our sponsors she is now enrolled in a 1-year foundation Accounting course at Gambia Technical Training Institution (GTTI)

Thanks to our education program we were able to put many orphan girls in school. Educating the girl child is like educating a whole nation. Thanks to our sponsors many of them are pursuing their dreams to be educated.

Girls Group

Each Friday Girls Group we come together to share Islamic reminders! We discuss important topics from Quran/sunnah and reflect on how we can incorporate the teachings into our daily lives as an important part of our sisterhood.

Community Clean-Up Project

On this day we did our first community clean-up project. Explaining the importance to the kids of keeping their community clean. This will be an ongoing project where we will provide bins and work with the community to keep the streets clean.

Girls First Aid Training

Thanks to Red Cross our girls completed their first aid training and will be able to take these skills back to their villages/communities. Somebody trained in first aid can save a life and reduce repeat accidents.

Support of Female Inmates

In partnership with The Ministry of Interior, GEMS was able to distribute hygiene packs to the female inmates in mile 2 prisons while giving a talk on health & hygiene management. We met with the commissioner to work on a long-term plan to support our sisters.

Trained Girls on FGM

We had Sarah Malik coming from the UK to train our girls on FGM. A very relevant topic that affects over 70% of women/girls in The Gambia. Our aim is to roll out an FGM training program in schools to educate the younger generation & protect our girls now and in the future.
